It is 1846. Dred Scott is an enslaved African American. He is brought from a slave state to a free state by his owner. Two years later, Scott and his owner move back to a slave state. Scott believes that he should not have to return to living in slavery because he once lived in a free state. He sues to prove that he and his family should be free.
