It is now 150 years later. The U.S. is fighting in World War II. You learn about what is happening in newspapers and on the radio. In New Hampshire, Walter Chaplinsky argues with and insults a police officer. The police arrest him. The case, Chaplinsky vs. New Hampshire, goes to the Supreme Court in 1942. The judges rule that the First Amendment does not protect fighting words. Fighting words are any words said face to face that are intended to cause violence.
