1960's

It is now the 1960’s. You have a television, but there are no personal computers, e-mails, or cell phones. A man named Charles Katz places an illegal bet from a phone booth in California. The police listen to the call using a phone tap and arrest him. In the 1967 Supreme Court case, Katz vs. the United States, the judges rule that people have the right to privacyin their homes, cars, offices, and even phone booths. Phone taps are illegal without a warrant. The Fourth Amendment now protects you from searches without a warrant even when you are not at home.
