The Supreme Court says that schools have a duty to protect their students from harm. At the same time, schools must respect the constitutional rights of their students. If a school has evidence that a student broke a school rule, they are allowed to search the student. How much evidence should a school need to search a student or a student’s belongings? What is a reasonable search?

Should the right to privacy apply to students when they are in school? Or should students expect to give up some of their rights in order to maintain a safe school environment? If a school has a problem with violence or drugs should students expect to be searched on a regular basis? Can you think of other situations where reasonable searches might be necessary?
