It is the 1970’s. There is a lot of crime. William Furman, a black man, kills a woman while robbing her house. He is twenty-six years old and only finished the sixth grade. At his trial, doctors say he is developmentally disabled. He is sentenced to death. In the 1972 Supreme Court case Furman vs. Georgia, the judges rule that the death penalty is not fair. There can be no death penalty if there is racial bias. Juries cannot be forced to give the death penalty to every murderer.
