It is now the 1920’s. A new invention called the telephone lets you talk with people in other places. This also means that the government can listen to your phone calls. In the 1920’s alcohol is illegal all over the United States. Roy Olmstead makes a lot of money selling illegal liquor. The police tap his phone and use the evidence to arrest him. In the 1928 Supreme Court case, Olmstead vs. the United States, the judges rule that the police can listen to people’s phone calls if the phone tap is located outside the home. During this time, the Fourth Amendment protects only what is inside your home from unreasonable searches. This means your phone calls may not be private.
