1790's

It is now the 1790s. You get most of your information from newspapers and local meetings. Some people are afraid that the First Amendment gives people too much freedom. The U.S. Congress and President John Adams pass the Sedition Act in 1798. This law says that people cannot criticize the government in newspapers or at public meetings. Many people feel this law goes against the First Amendment. The law is very unpopular and lasts only three years.
